Seikkailu - Adventure

Oli synkkä ja myrskyinen yö... Taustalla kuului saapuvan junan kohinaa... mutta hetkinen, eihän täällä ole rautateitä...

Trooppinen sade oli tulossa kohti "Windy Hilliä", korkeaa kukkulaa, jossa asuntomme sijaitsi. Täällä kaukaisella tyynen meren saarella sateet olivat usein kovia ja äkillisiä ja kuulosti kuin juna olisi kulkenut talojen katoilla. 

Sateen tulo oli täällä kuumuudessa odotettu siunaus; saimme sadevesisäiliömme täyteen raikasta vettä, vaikkakin kovalla tuulella satoi lähes vaakasuoraan ja jos ikkuna oli unohtunut auki, vesi saattoi kastella huoneen vastakkaiseen seinään asti. Elämä tuntui täällä monellakin tapaa erilaiselta ja haasteelliselta. 

Lähdimme oravanpyörästä ja hyppäsimme huikeaan seikkailuun tänne Salomonsaarille ja päädyimme vuodeksi vapaaehtoistyöhön paikalliseen ammattioppilaitokseen Malaitan saarelle. Asuimme Aukin kaupungissa Windy Hill kukkulalla, josta oli mahtavat näkymät suoraan Tyynelle Merelle. 

Saarilla kaipasimme usein laadukasta kahvia. Pääsaaressa käydessä kyllä saatoimme istua ilmastoidussa viihtyisässä kahvilassa juoden jäälattea ja muita erikoiskahveja, mutta se oli harvinaista herkkua. Meille syntyi idea pizzeria-kahvilasta omalla kotisaarella, jossa paikalliset opiskelijatkin voisivat harjoitella leipomista ja kahvilanpitoa.

Halusimme myös perehtyä kahvin viljelyyn ja paahtamiseen. Ajatuksena oli että viljelemällä kahvia, sekä perustamalla paahtimon, asukkaat voisivat tuottaa erilaisia kahvituotteita kahviloihin ja aina vientiin asti.

Tämä projekti jäi meillä kesken, kun palasimme Suomeen. Toivomme, että jonain päivänä palaamme Malaitan saarelle kahvin merkeissä. Meille jäi saarilta mahtavia muistoja, huikeita seikkailuja ja tarinoita, joita on mukava muistella hyvässä seurassa. Tämän reissun jälkeen kaipasimme elämäämme muutosta ja uusia tuulia.

Muutama vuosi myöhemmin tapasimme paahtimo-kahvilassa yrittäjäpariskunnan, joka oli aloittanut paahtimotoiminnan lähes tyhjästä. Saimme siitä kipinän oman paahtimo-kahvilan perustamiseen ja pääsimme pian harjoittelemaan paahtamista ja kahvilan pitoa kyseisessä yrityksessä.

Paahtaminen alkoi sujua ja kahvi maistua, joten ajattelimme, että miksei sitä voisi perustaa virallisesti yrityksen ja katsoa miten asiat etenevät. Asiakaskuntaa on kertynyt mukavasti ja hyvää palautetta on tullut. Täällä Keski-Pohjanmaan seuduilla on Windy Hill kaffit tulleet jo monille tutuiksi ja matkanneet eri puolelle Suomea ja maailmaa.

Adventure

It was a dark and stormy night... We could hear the sound of a train approaching... But wait a minute, there's no railway here!

The tropical rain was heading towards "Windy Hill", a high hill, where our apartment was located. On this distant pacific island the rains where often heavy and sudden, and it sounded like a train would be passing over the rooftops.

The rain was a blessing, long awaited here in the heat. We got our rain water containers full of fresh water. Although if it was really windy the rain would be almost horizontal, and if we had forgotten to close the window, the water could wet the whole room all the way to the opposite wall! Life here felt different and challenging in many ways.

We dropped out of the rat race and jumped into a great adventure here on the Solomon Islands. We ended up volunteering for a year in a local vocational school on the island of Malaita. We were living in Auki city, on Windy Hill, with a tremendous view over the Pacific Ocean.

On the islands we often longed for high quality coffee. When visiting the main island we would ocationally sit in an air conditioned, cosy cafe, drinking iced latte and other specialty coffees, but that was few and far between. We got the idea of starting a pizza & coffee shop on our home island, a place where also the local students would be able to practice baking and running a cafeteria.

We also wanted to explore the growing and roasting of coffee. The plan was that by cultivating coffee and founding a roastery, the locals would be able to produce various coffee products to cafeterias and even for exporting.

This project was left unfinished when we returned to Finland. We are hoping to someday go back to Malaita island with the vision regarding coffee. We left the islands with great memories, fantastic adventures and stories, which we enjoy discussing in good company. After this journey we longed for change and something new in our life.

A few years later we met an entreprenour couple in their roastery-coffee shop. They had started the roastery work from next to nothing. We got a spark towards starting our own roastery-cafe and soon we found ourselves as trainees in this company, roasting coffee and running the cafe.

The roasting started to work out and the coffee started to taste good. We thought: why not officially start a company, and then see how things go from there? Now we have gained a good number of customers and got positive response on our products. Here in our region, Central Ostrobothnia, the Windy Hill coffees are familiar to many. Our coffee has also travelled to different parts of Finland and around the world.
